In saner climes, politicians help themselves and help others. In Nigeria, once elected, office becomes a private enterprise of fraud and when chickens eat each other’s intestine, the chicken with upper hands punishes the weaker one as if what is in contention is not for the general public.
Yes Nigeria is a country of multiple nationalities and faith. Nepotism is present. Cronyism is endemic. Corruption is pervasive. Suspicions and oppression is present. It is not limited to a group or ethnicity.
Balkanize Nigeria into units of tenth, twenty or hundreds, if the attitude to governance and disdain for laws persist, the answer is zero.
You must have a vibrant and uncompromising fourth estate of the realm.
You must present quality people for leadership and you must have enlightened citizens who must see man made poverty as a challenge they must overcome and not a way of life.
Godliness is not same as religion. Faith is not congregation and endless dances in faith houses.
Democracy is about majority having their way and minority having their say. Once elections are concluded, victorious candidates become the servant of every voter irrespective of choice of candidate. Suffice to say a president is the president of a country and not a president of a region, religion, gender or profession.
In Nigeria, all democratically elected governors have federal allocations and they still generate their own IGR. Who stops a governor from turning his or her state into a mini Dubai or micro Singapore?
Leaders come and go, palace courtiers will always hold leaders’ captive for their own selfish ends. They are the real enemies of the state and the country.
We can make Nigeria work by being proactive as the societal dynamics change.
Nothing stops us from retooling the security network such that state police, municipal police are allowed to come alive and the institution of judiciary reigns supreme over all and sundry.
This is the easy way out and not foreboding agitations that can create more problems than solved.
