by No where is the idiom more appropriate than in Nigeria and except may be in other weird countries with similar bizarre situation as in Nigeria.
The idiom simply means that process, the package and the delivery of judicial conclusion that runs counter or contrary to common sense.
In Nigeria, it connotes assault on judicial process made possible by elements of corruption, cult induced, personality induced, and so many extraneous forces combined that compromise legality, law and judicial conclusion.
In Nigeria, it has happened ceaselessly that an individual or a group would be entrusted with a public responsibility that is guided by certain set of rules, guiding laws or binding statutes and validated by by the constitution; yet when grossly abused, deliberately plundered, assaulted with impunity, and such abuses are discovered and restitution is sought by the appropriate agencies, there are still some loopholes to explore to legalize illegality. Indeed the law is an ass.
The constitutions of the federal republic of Nigeria for instance, state clearly the processes to assume power. For argument sake, in the case of suffrage robbery by elected rogue leaders, who should have more right to defend their freedom and liberty? Those who surrendered temporarily their sovereignty or a nucleus of the Surrenderers?
The appropriate group should be the mass Surrenderers of sovereignty. But in Nigeria, a cell or group of cells within a nucleus would just stage a surprise attack albeit violently and overthrow the elected even though in contention and jettison the code of governance in this case the constitution especially if made by the people. it is in Nigeria you would be dazed with oddity of a strikingly similar situation in the electoral process of one state and another in the same federal system that is taken to the judiciary for interpretation and resolution that will now produce a different outcome. Yet the law is supposed to be interpreted on precedence. Indeed the law is an ass.
It is in Nigeria that moral interpretation does not align with legal interpretation. A potential felon whose matter is under determination in the court no matter the weight of evidence against them will have the audacity to seek election that a felon is not entitled to. Indeed the law is an ass.

Since Nigeria started her free fall to insanity of corruption and other anti development allures that has benefitted the elite and has continued to benefit them, the law has been badly bruised to the extent that it is nothing but an ass.
